The landscape does most of the work in Hampi. Granite boulders the colour of sand pile up between temple ruins, banana fields and the river, and low sun turns the stone warm. From mid-morning the same stone throws hard heat and harsh light back at faces, so the day splits into a sunrise session and a late afternoon session with a long break between.
It is a long way from Bengaluru, which makes this a trip of at least two nights rather than a drive out. The sites are spread across both banks of the river, and moving between them takes longer than the map suggests.
