Élan shoots wedding stills in two modes that need different hours of the day. Everything that unfolds on its own is observed at a distance with no direction and nothing repeated. The family portraits are directed in a scheduled block of twenty to forty minutes, against a list of names agreed weeks beforehand, starting with grandparents. Purely candid coverage reliably misses relatives who did nothing photographable, which is why both are planned rather than one being assumed.

What does candid wedding coverage look like on the day?
Longer lenses, more distance, more frames taken and more discarded. Nobody is asked to repeat anything and nobody is positioned by the shoulders. This is where the movement lives — the walk in, the turn, the hand that reaches out at the edge of frame — and it is the reason the studio exists.
It also has a known failure mode, and we will not pretend otherwise: worked alone, observed coverage misses people. Your uncle who stood quietly at the back all evening did nothing photographable, and a purely candid set will not contain him. That is why the directed block is not optional.
How are family portraits handled?
Twenty to forty minutes, scheduled, with a list written eight weeks earlier of the people who must be in frames. Grandparents first, because they tire and because those are the photographs that get asked for again in ten years.
It is unglamorous and it is the part of the day families are most grateful for afterwards. We build it into the timeline rather than trying to squeeze it in after the meal when half the list has gone home.
What happens when the light is difficult?
- Fast glass, because the alternative in a dim hall is noise or motion blur and both are permanent.
- A light we place and control, set before the room fills rather than fired into faces during a ritual.
- A colour policy for mixed sources, decided in advance, so faces are one consistent colour across the finished set instead of green in one frame and magenta in the next.

How many photos do you deliver?
The number depends on how many events and how long we are there, and any studio quoting a fixed count before seeing your timeline is quoting a package rather than your wedding. What we commit to in writing is the count for your specific coverage, and the delivery date, before you sign.
Do you take family group photographs?
Yes, as a deliberate block with its own time in the schedule, and with a list of names agreed beforehand. Trying to capture formal family portraits candidly is the single most common way couples end up without a photograph of a grandparent.
Do you give raw files?
No, and we say so before you book rather than after. A raw file is an unfinished thing that will look worse than what you were shown. What you get is the finished set, and we will tell you exactly what that includes.
