When to book a wedding photographer, and what to lock first
Book a wedding photographer six to nine months ahead for a peak-season Indian date — November to February in the south — and three to four months ahead off-peak. The binding constraint is that the specific person you liked can only be at one wedding a day, so a studio being "available" is not the same as that person being available. Settle the family-frame list at eight weeks and the getting-ready logistics early enough that a second shooter can be arranged if the bride and groom are preparing in different places.
The booking timeline that avoids the scramble. Photographers are booked earlier than couples expect, for a reason that is simple and absolute: one person can only be at one wedding on one day.

Why do wedding photographers get booked so early?
Unlike a caterer or a decorator, a photography studio cannot scale to take your date once the good people on the team are committed. When a studio says it is booked, it means the specific person you liked is not available, and being offered somebody else on the same team is a different product at the same price.
When should you book, and what should you lock at each stage?
- Nine to six months out, for a peak-season date. In South India that is November to February, and the good studios fill first. Lock the date and the named lead.
- Four to three months out, off-peak. Same conversation, less urgency.
- Eight weeks out. Settle the shot list that matters — the four people who must be in family frames, the relative flying in, the ritual specific to your family that a photographer from elsewhere will not recognise.
- Three weeks out. Timeline in writing, with the muhurtham time, the getting-ready locations and how far apart they are, and who the photographer calls if they cannot find you.
- One week out. Confirm the crew who are actually coming, by name.
Which two deadlines do couples miss?
The first is the family-frame list. It gets left until the week of the wedding, by which point nobody has the attention to think about it, and the result is a set with no photograph of the groom with his grandmother. Write it eight weeks out while it is still an abstract task.
The second is the getting-ready logistics. Couples decide late that the bride will get ready at home and the groom at the venue forty minutes away, then discover that a single photographer cannot be in both places. Deciding this early is what makes the second-shooter conversation possible.
