The dry season runs roughly April to October. Within it, the constraint that actually shapes a Bali schedule is traffic: the island's roads are single-lane for most of their length and a thirty kilometre move between Ubud and the south coast can take two hours in the afternoon. Every workable Bali plan is built around staying in one region per day.
And one thing worth knowing before you fall in love with a photograph: the famous "Gates of Heaven" reflection at Pura Lempuyang is not water. It is a mirror held under the camera by the person taking the picture, there is a long ticketed queue for the spot, and the reflection in every image you have seen was made that way. We would rather you heard that from us than found out at the front of the queue.

The southwest-facing cliffs are the strongest light on the island in the last hour. The temple itself has monkeys that will take anything loose — jewellery, veils, a lens cap — and that is not a joke about Bali, it is the single most common thing that goes wrong here.
Terraces are privately farmed and each section charges its own small access donation. Go at first light — by nine it is a queue for the swings. The green depends entirely on the planting cycle; a terrace that was emerald last month may be cut mud now, which is worth checking before you build the day around it.
A fast boat crossing plus rough island roads means this is a full committed day, and the crossing is genuinely unpleasant in swell. The cliff viewpoints have no barriers. Worth it for the scale, which nothing on the main island matches.
Sunset silhouette location, and one of the most crowded on the island. The coast road north towards Tabanan has empty black-sand beaches that nobody shoots.
What Ubud looked like before Ubud. Longer drive, far fewer people, and the volcano in the background on a clear morning. The best trade in Bali between effort and frames nobody else has.
Ridge walk works at sunrise only. Water temples are active places of worship with bathing rituals in progress; a pre-wedding shoot in them ranges from restricted to inappropriate, and the respectful frame is from outside.
Permission and rules
Temples require a sarong and sash for everyone entering, including the couple, and that is not negotiable regardless of what the outfit is. Some temples prohibit pre-wedding photography outright, several charge a photography fee, and during ceremonies access closes entirely with no notice.
Nyepi, the day of silence, shuts the entire island including the airport for twenty-four hours. It moves each year with the Balinese calendar. Check it against your dates before booking anything.
Drones require permission and are restricted around temples, the airport corridor and much of the south. Several of the cliff sites have their own bans that are enforced by staff on the ground.

April to October, the dry season. Within that, May, June and September give you the best combination of dry weather and slightly thinner crowds than the July–August peak.
Four nights minimum, five is better. The island's traffic means you get one region per day — a Uluwatu day, an Ubud day, a Nusa Penida day — and trying to combine two regions in one day is how couples end up with two hours of shooting and six hours in a car.
It varies by temple and it is asked in advance, not at the gate. Sarong and sash are required for everyone. Some prohibit pre-wedding photography entirely, and access closes without notice during ceremonies. The exterior and the surrounding landscape are usually the better and less fraught frame anyway.
