Galle Fort
The rampart walk is the location and the light runs along it — east side at sunrise, west wall at sunset. The streets inside are best before 08:00. It is a living UNESCO site with residents, so a large crew is conspicuous and unwelcome.
Sri LankaSri Lanka
Sri Lanka is the shortest flight from South India that produces frames nobody at the wedding will recognise. It is also two countries weather-wise, and picking the wrong coast for the month is the mistake that ruins the trip.
The island has two monsoons running on opposite schedules. The south and west — Galle, Bentota, Mirissa, Colombo — are at their best from December to March. The east coast is the reverse, best from May to September. The hill country around Ella and Nuwara Eliya sits between the two and holds mist most mornings regardless, which is exactly what you want.
A workable trip is four nights: two on the south coast, two in the hills, with the train between them as a shoot in its own right. Trying to add Sigiriya as well turns the whole thing into driving.
The locationsAnd how each one actually works
The rampart walk is the location and the light runs along it — east side at sunrise, west wall at sunset. The streets inside are best before 08:00. It is a living UNESCO site with residents, so a large crew is conspicuous and unwelcome.
The train times are the whole plan — you build the shoot around a crossing and everything else is filler. Get there for the first crossing of the day; by mid-morning there is a crowd of a hundred people on the same viewpoint. The walk in is steep and slippery in wet weather.
High, cold and misty at dawn — genuinely cold, around 10°C, which a couple in Indian wedding clothes will feel. The terraces photograph best with side light in the first hour. Estates are private; the roadside is not.
Second class reserved is the seat you want, or unreserved for the doorway. It is a genuinely crowded public train, not a charter, and hanging out of the door is how people get hurt. Shoot it as documentary, not as a set-up.
Small, steep and heavily visited — first light or nothing. The hill is on private land and access arrangements have changed more than once, so it is a check-on-the-day location.
The most convenient base on the south coast and the easiest beach light on the island. Bentota river at dusk gives you something other than sand.
Pidurangala is where you shoot Sigiriya from — the rock itself is the view, not the vantage. It is a hard forty-minute climb with a scramble at the top, so it is a location for a couple who will actually do that in the dark to get there for sunrise.
Permission and rules
Ticketed heritage sites administered by the Central Cultural Fund treat a commercial or pre-wedding shoot differently from a tourist with a camera, and permission is arranged in advance rather than at the gate. Galle Fort ramparts are open public space; the museums and specific properties inside are not.
Drones are regulated by the Civil Aviation Authority of Sri Lanka and require registration and clearance, with heritage sites and anywhere near the airports effectively out. This is arranged weeks ahead, not on arrival, and flying without it is the kind of problem that ends a trip.
Indian passport holders need an ETA before travel. It is straightforward, and it is worth doing early enough that the gear list is not the thing holding up the trip.
December to March if you are shooting the south and west — Galle, Bentota, Mirissa, Colombo — which is what most Indian couples want. May to September if you are going to the east coast instead. The hill country around Ella and Nuwara Eliya works through most of the year and is driest from January to March.
Four nights is the honest minimum for two regions: two on the south coast, two in the hill country, with the train between them. Three nights means you spend a third of the trip in a vehicle. Adding Sigiriya to a four-night trip does not work.
Only with Civil Aviation Authority registration and clearance, arranged in advance. Heritage sites and airport zones are effectively closed to it. It is not a decision to make at the location.
The flight from South India is shorter and cheaper than either, which is usually the difference that matters. On the ground, costs sit close to Thailand and below Bali. The real saving is time: you can do a Sri Lanka shoot on a long weekend, which you cannot do for Bali.
